Austin ISD further delayed its first round of boundary recommendations to September as district officials await more up-to-date enrollment information.
What’s happening
AISD had planned to share draft recommendations for the first phase by Aug. 7, but officials announced Aug. 11 that the district needs more time to assess its priorities amid complications, such as the Paredes Middle School closure and a new transportation model.
In the update shared with families, AISD said it wants to use actual enrollment data rather than summer estimates before finalizing proposals.
Per the district website, the first phase includes:
- Areas headed for serious overcrowding by 2027-28
- A first-ever attendance zone for Marshall Middle School
- Campuses affected by 2025 consolidations, including ones that would otherwise need portable classrooms
AISD’s board of trustees is scheduled to vote on phase one in October, according to the update.
Some context
AISD split its boundary work into two phases back in July, according to the district, after more than 2,750 people commented on the district's original plan. The districtwide overhaul, originally set for 2027-28, is now pushed to fall 2028, as stated in the Aug. 11 update.
Superintendent Matias Segura said in a July letter to families that the delay was needed to work through budget, staffing and enrollment issues after recent school consolidations.
According to previous Community Impact reporting, the process began in spring 2025, when declining enrollment and financial problems prompted AISD to review its boundaries and consider closures.
By April 2026, the focus shifted to boundary changes, and the district paused further closures. Meetings in May and June 2026 introduced two early draft scenarios, "Oak" and "Elm," which AISD described as starting points for feedback rather than final plans.
What parents should know
AISD will host open houses throughout September to gather feedback on phase one recommendations once they're released. Public meetings are scheduled for Aug. 29 from 10 a.m.-noon at Marshall Middle School and Sept. 14 and 16 from 6-7:30 p.m., although the location has not been announced.
The district said all feedback already submitted through the comment card and past open houses for the first phase has been documented and will be factored into discussions for the second phase.
What's next
AISD's broader, districtwide boundary process, which will cover feeder patterns and potential consolidation, is expected to begin in January 2027, with community engagement for the second phase starting in spring 2027. The district said more details on the phase two scope, process and timeline will come later this fall.
