From Aug. 9-11, Texas retailers will sell a variety of school supplies and clothing without sales taxes.

This is the 25th consecutive year of the statewide sales tax holiday, which typically aligns with the beginning of the K-12 school year.

What you need to know

Qualifying items priced under $100—including backpacks, lunch boxes, uniforms, graduation gowns, school supplies and more—will be exempt from local and state sales taxes during the holiday. Purchases can be made in person, online, by phone or by mail.

A complete list of tax-exempt school supplies and other items, which is determined by the Texas Legislature, is available on the Texas Comptroller’s website.

Shoppers will save an estimated $143.4 million in sales taxes over the weekend, Comptroller Glenn Hegar estimated.

“For a quarter of a century, Texans have saved more than $1.8 billion on everything from blue jeans to ballpoint pens in preparation for the back-to-school bell,” Hegar said in a news release. “As the father of three, I know firsthand how these expenses add up over the years, and this weekend is the perfect time for folks to save some of their hard-earned cash on items they need.”

Other details

Sales taxes are automatically removed from purchases, unless you are using a business account.

If you are charged for sales tax on qualifying items during the holiday, you may request a refund directly from the seller or fill out a form.

Texas has two other sales tax holidays each year: emergency supplies in April, and energy- and water-saving products over Memorial Day weekend.
