A 51-inch live oak tree in Kyle will be moved to accommodate a road project this fall, and the city is taking steps to preserve it.

In February, Kyle City Council voted 6-1 to relocate the tree near Old Stagecoach Road to make way for the voter-approved road bond project that involved widening the road to four lanes, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.

The project

This project will widen and reconstruct Old Stagecoach Road and a portion of Center Street to make it a continuous four-lane roadway from FM 150 at FM 2770 to FM 150 at Center Street, a news release from the city of Kyle states.

Work will be completed in three parts:
  • North portion of Old Stagecoach Road: FM 2770 to Six Creeks Boulevard
  • Old Stagecoach Road: Six Creeks Boulevard to Center Street
  • Center Street: Old Stagecoach Road to FM 150
Why it matters

The Old Stagecoach Heritage Oak, a centuries-old 51-inch-wide live oak and valued city landmark, will be carefully relocated to a nearby city-owned site at the 6 Creeks Subdivision, creating a small park to preserve and protect it, according to a news release by the city. The move supports road improvements approved in the 2022 General Obligation Bond Election.

The impact

The news release states that the city of Kyle approved $932,800 for tree relocation and care. Most funding will come from developer contributions for Old Stagecoach Road improvements.

Rachel Sonnier, a spokesperson for the city of Kyle, said the tree is set to be moved sometime this fall, but the relocation has not yet begun. Post-relocation care will continue until fall 2027. This website will be updated as the process moves forward.
