Ahead of the first day of school on Aug. 13, Hays CISD officials compiled a back-to-school newsletter with information on new elementary school bell schedules, free and reduced-price meal applications, school bus seatbelt safety, and more. Here’s what you need to know before the first day back.

Back-to-school shopping

Texas’ Sales Tax Holiday will take place Aug. 9-11. Most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 will be exempt from state sales taxes during the holiday.

Elementary school supply lists can be found here. Middle and high school teachers will assign specific supplies needed for their class, but students are asked to come with basic supplies, such as pencils, pens and paper.

Families can also donate school supplies and backpacks to the Hays CISD Clothes Closet located at 3839B E. FM 150 in Kyle or the Hays CISD Central Office at 21003 I-35 in Kyle. Donations are tax deductible.

If you need assistance from the Clothes Closet with school supplies, submit an online help form here. Supply pickups will take place either Aug. 11 at 4 p.m. or Aug. 12 at 10 a.m.

Back-to-school events

Elementary meet-the-teacher night will be held Aug. 8 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. High school meet-the-teacher night will be held Sept. 17 from 5:15-7:30 p.m. with times varying per campus.

District officials added that photos from the first day of school can be messaged to the Hays CISD Facebook page or emailed to [email protected] to be featured on the district Facebook page.

Required immunizations

A number of immunizations are required for Texas students in pre-K through 12th grade, including polio, measles, tetanus, meningitis and hepatitis vaccines. The full list, along with low-cost options, can be viewed here.

Bell time changes

The new elementary school end time is now 3 p.m. instead of 2:55 p.m. Officials said the additional five minutes on each school day helps keep the school calendar flexible, bank for inclement weather and accommodate required teacher conference time.

For the 2024-25 school year, regular school day schedules are as follows:
  • Elementary schools: 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Middle schools: 8:10 a.m.-3:45 p.m.
  • High schools: 8:55 a.m.-4:25 p.m.
Free and reduced-price meals

Applications for free and reduced-price meals can be submitted here. A new application needs to be on file for the 2024-25 school year. Students who qualify for reduced-price meals will receive breakfast for free, and lunch will cost $0.40.

Camino Real, Hemphill, Science Hall and Uhland elementary schools as well as Simon Middle School will provide free breakfast and lunch to all students under the Community Eligibility Provision program.

Regular menu prices for breakfast and lunch at all other campuses remain the same:
  • Elementary schools: $1.25 for breakfast and $2.70 for lunch
  • Middle and high schools: $1.35 for breakfast and $2.90 for lunch
School safety

Per the newsletter, campuses will have their own individual traffic plans, including drop-off and pickup plans for the school year. School zone traffic lights will be on and enforced the week before the first day of school.

All regular route buses are also now equipped with seatbelts, and many support buses—which are used for field trips or as backup for regular route buses—have seatbelts. Officials are reminding all students that wearing a seatbelt is required while the bus is in motion.

Additionally, all students, staff, volunteers and visitors are required to wear and keep ID badges visible while on any HCISD campus.
