The SMCISD board of trustees was updated on the vaccination process during a Jan. 19 meeting.
“We have been in multiple talks with [Hays] County,” SMCISD School Safety Director Doug Wozniak said. “We actually met with them [Jan. 18] to devise our vaccination schedule, and basically, we’re waiting on that 'go' from the county.”
The plan states that vaccinations will commence 72 hours from delivery confirmation and will occur throughout a two- to three-day event from approximately noon-7 p.m. at the SMCISD Performing Arts Center.
Wozniak said the figure of 800 vaccinations is a preliminary estimate, and it is important to let people know what the district will initially have so expectations will not exceed what is available.
“We won’t turn anybody away, but from a health department standpoint, they needed numbers,” he said. “The worst thing that can happen is that we tell [the county] we need 800 [doses], and then, 1,200 employees show up, and we don’t have enough vaccines. So, we need to know numbers now so that we can prepare for this thing.”
The district estimates that 800 adults will receive the vaccine once they arrive. Wozniak said district staff remain the first priority for distribution of the vaccine in the initial stages.
Trustee Miguel Arredondo requested that the district create a data dashboard that would update people on the district’s vaccination numbers, and Wozniak said he would work on a process to get that complete.
With regard to COVID-19 testing, Wozniak said, so far, 658 tests have been administered through Jan. 14. Of those, 18 students and 39 adults tested positive.
