The city of Round Rock started construction to renovate Old Settlers Park, closing parts of the park for safety.

The current situation

Construction on the multi-phase Old Settlers Park buildout project began Sept. 23. The Lakeview area is the first to undergo renovations, which will eventually include a new pavilion overlooking the lake and planned event stage.

The Lakeview pavilion and Joanne Land Playground are currently closed while construction takes place. The rest of the park is still open to the public.

About the project

Future plans for the park include:

  • Upgrades to Rock’N River water park, including additional parking
  • Civil and electrical upgrades for built-in infrastructure for events
  • Ex[anding the Multipurpose Complex, including six new fields
  • Expanding the Adult Recreation Complex, relocating the tennis complex and pickleball courts

The buildout project is funded by 2023 voter-approved bonds.

What else?

Harrell Parkway will also undergo improvements, including a roadway connection to Kenny Fort Boulevard. The city will construct a new bridge and pedestrian walkway to improve safety getting to and from Old Settlers Park. These improvements are funded by city Type B sales tax revenue.

The update

Round Rock City Council approved an amendment for pre-work with the construction manager at a Sept. 26 meeting. Because delivery times for the planned bridge and underpass will be over 30 weeks, the city executed the $500,000 allowance to make an order.

“We’re on such a tight schedule,” Director of General Services Chad McDowell said at a Sept. 24 packet briefing.

The city will continue to update residents on park closures and project timeline, officials said.
