The Round Rock ISD board of trustees tackled the empty seat on its dais on Monday night by reviewing the vacancy appointment policy. Just two weeks ago, newly appointed trustee Stuart Selvaggi stepped down from his position after details about his financial and criminal history came to light. The board in turn started exploring how to include background checks as part of the application process for vacant trustee seats. At Monday night's special-called meeting, the trustees decided to ask applicants to consent to a background check on the application. The district currently contracts with a background check agency for unlimited background checks that look into criminal history and whether candidates for employment are sexual offenders. The trustees also looked at adapting the governor's application for appointees to fit RRISD standards. The governor's application, as is, can be viewed here. The new application will contain questions asking about financial history and potential conflicts of interest. Before the application is put into use, trustees will make a final approval. Trustees also discussed how to move forward with the current vacancy in Place 6. Board President Diane Cox suggested opening up the new application process to the two other names suggested on Selvaggi's appointment night —John Grey II and Ryan Baker. Going forward, the board plans on approving the new application and then opening it up to Grey and Baker. The board will have an opportunity to ask clarifying questions to both individuals should they agree to go through the process. Trustee Suzy David also suggested opening up the process to former trustees, who wouldn't necessarily have as steep of a learning curve as a new candidate. Cox said the process could be opened up to former trustees should neither Grey nor Baker finish the process as the final appointee.
