Hutto City Council Thursday night saw a presentation on the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) projects that Hutto will send to Williamson County for consideration.

The two projects that city staff intends to submit for application to the Williamson County Commissioners Court calls for $300,000 in CDBG funds.

CDBG funds are U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) federal grants that are allocated to provide resources to low-to-moderate income persons and communities.

One project would add a connecting sidewalk from the Hutto Parke subdivision to a sidewalk that runs to Limmer Loop. Hutto Director of Economic Development Jessica Bullock told council members at Thursday’s regularly scheduled meeting that the project would provide help to families and children walking to the nearby Creekwood Elementary School.

The neighborhood already has an internal sidewalk system, but the CDBG funds would pay for a project to connect those sidewalks a the sidewalk on FM 1660.

The larger project the city is looking to bankroll through CDBG funds is the Creekside Park project. Those funds could go toward costs for lighting systems, sports fields, parking, irrigation systems, a botanical garden and the addition of picnic tables.

Bullock told council members that the grant would not jeopardize the fund that the park has already received from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

According to Bullock, Williamson County officials are evaluating CDBG proposals from eligible cities including Cedar Park, Coupland, Georgetown, Granger, Hutto, Jarrell, Leander, Liberty Hill, Taylor, Thrall and Weir. Preliminary recommendations will be presented to county officials and then to HUD sometime in late August to early September.
