The city of Pflugerville held a groundbreaking ceremony Dec. 2 for its Downtown East project, an initiative to develop the Pfluger Tract. The ceremony marked the beginning of Phase 1, which will include constructing a new city hall, multigenerational recreation center and civic plaza.
About the project
Pflugerville’s largest downtown initiative, Downtown East, will create a new city center with public amenities for residents.
“This project enables us to serve our community today while laying a strong foundation for future generations,” Assistant City Manager Emily Barron said.
Phase 1 of the project includes:
- Extending Main Street eastward to FM 685
- Constructing a new city hall
- A multigenerational recreation center, including retail space
- A civic plaza, including outdoor gathering spaces, a stage and performance area
- Additional parking and infrastructure
The recreation center will help accommodate the growing Pflugerville population, according to Parks and Recreation Director Shane Mize. With a kids zone, lazy river and e-games room, the new recreation center will have options for residents of all ages.
Looking ahead
Following the groundbreaking, city officials and contractors will work on developing the city’s newest public space. Phase 1 is slated to be complete in fall 2026, according to Barron.
Funding for this phase is estimated at $204.7 million, according a City Council update in April. General obligation bonds, certified obligation bonds, right-of-way acquisition funds, developer financing for retail and potential grant funding will help pay for the project.
“This is just one of the steps in the process for getting this project out of the ground,” Barron said. “We still have a lot of work to do.”
