Ongoing projects

I-35 Capital Express North


Project: This project will add one high-occupancy vehicle managed lane in each direction along I-35 between SH 45 North and US 290 East, reconstruct several bridges, relocate and reconstruct entrance and exit ramps, and enhance bicycle and pedestrian accommodations along the corridor.

Update: Beams have been set on all segments of bridges that were demolished in 2024. Construction continues on the bridge walls and U-turns, while utility work is anticipated to be complete in late 2025.

  • Cost: $606 million
  • Funding source: Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and Texas Department of Transportation
Burnet Road Mobility Program

Project: The project includes updated traffic signals, improved crossings, bus stop improvements, trail connections, curb extensions, drainage improvements, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant shared-use paths, raised medians and more on Burnet Road from White Horse Trail to US 183 (C2), Bright Verde Way to MoPac (C3) and US 183 to Bright Verde Way (C4).

Update: Work will begin at Burnet Road and Koenig Lane and continue north to approximately 500 feet south of US 183 (C2), final design is complete and project has gone to bid (C3 and C4).
  • Timeline: construction expected to begin in mid-November (C2), construction expected to begin in summer 2026 (C3), construction expected to begin in spring 2026 (C4)

Cameron Road/Dessau Road Safety Project


Project:
The project involves various safety improvements between Cameron and Dessau Road including protected bicycle lanes and shared-use paths, enhanced pedestrian crossings, improved bus stop safety, driveway access reconfigurations, street lighting upgrades and lane reconfiguration.

Update: Transit improvements have begun between East 51st Street and US 290, including bike lane protections and multimodal bus stops serving northbound and southbound routes.

  • Cost: $14 million
  • Funding source: 2020 Mobility Bond program, 2022 Safe Streets and Roads for All grant
January Drive Flood Risk Reduction project

Project:
The project includes decommissioning the storm drain pipe currently located on private property and installing a larger one underneath January Drive to allow for easier maintenance and flood risk. Work also includes restoring native plants along the banks of Walnut Creek to prevent erosion.

Update: The new storm drain pipe has been installed. Remaining work includes video inspection of the new pipe, decommissioning some of the existing system, repaving and restoring native plants.

  • Funding source: 2018 drainage bonds
Completed projects


Scofield Farms Drive speed limit reduction

Project: This ordinance amends a city code to establish a maximum speed limit of 20 miles per hour during certain times along a segment of Scofield Farms Drive near River Oaks Elementary School, and install a crosswalk.

Update: Austin City Council approved the item Oct. 25, and the ordinance took effect Nov. 3. Per backup material, the school has been in session for several years, and a reduced speed school zone was not installed, but the area has seen an increase in traffic.
