The Leander City Council approved purchases amounting to nearly $875,000 for ten vehicles to support the city’s police and public works departments Aug. 20.
During the same meeting, the city council also approved a $700,000 contract for the leasing of golf carts for the Crystal Falls Golf Course.
By the numbers
The purchases include six police vehicles for more than $634,000, three Ford trucks for the Public Works department for less than $161,000 and a mini excavator for the Public Works department costing less than $80,000.
The council approved the purchase of six vehicles, including three new patrol cars and a new K-9 vehicle. While the vehicles cost more than $541,000, installing the necessary software and technology adds less than $93,000 to the bill. The funding for this purchase comes from the city’s vehicle replacement fund.
The council also approved the purchase of three Ford trucks for the Public Works Department’s Water and Wastewater division for a little less than $161,000. The trucks will support operations at the Sandy Creek Water Treatment Plant, which will fully transition leadership from the Brazos River Authority to the City of Leander by October 2026, according to city documents. This purchase is funded through the city’s utility fund.
The council also approved the purchase of a mini excavator for the Public Works Department’s Streets division for less than $80,000. Since the streets division previously relied on the excavator used by the Public Work’s Utility Division, city documents state that purchasing this machinery will help the city provide faster response times, save on costs and increase the department’s capacity to provide maintenance and repairs. This purchase is funded through the city’s operating budget.

The council approved a two-year contract to lease 92 golf carts and a hauler cart for the Crystal Falls Golf Course for more than $700,000.
City documents indicate that the annual revenue from golf cart rentals at the course averages more than $600,000.
Two of the golf carts will carry six passengers each, while the remaining 90 carts can carry two passengers.
