CapMetro and Brandywine Realty Trust officials announced in an Oct. 6 news release that preliminary site work on the station, previously known as Broadmoor Station, is set to begin this month ahead of full construction in November.
Some context
Officials broke ground on the North Burnet/Uptown Station in January 2022, and it will be located within Uptown ATX, a 66-acre mixed-use development slated to be completely built out by 2028. Uptown currently has apartments and office space, and future phases are set to include retail and hospitality uses, green space and more residential units.
The station's name change from Broadmoor Station better reflects its geographic location in the North Burnet area and Uptown ATX development, CapMetro officials said in an email to Community Impact.
Per the release, the station is slated to become one of the busiest stations along the Red Line. This year so far, the Red Line has averaged 1,891 daily weekday riders and 2,421 daily Saturday riders.
The details
Officials said the North Burnet/Uptown Station will cost approximately $49.3 million to build, with $12 million being funded by Brandywine and $37.3 million being funded by CapMetro.
Per the release, Brandywine contributed the land and is coordinating its infrastructure and planning, while CapMetro is providing the mobility framework and operational infrastructure.
The station has an expected completion date of mid-2027 and is set to feature:
- Two double-length platforms and over half a mile of double track to accommodate high-capacity service
- Pedestrian and bike-friendly pathways
- Local bus route connections
- 200 shared parking spaces
- Safety and security enhancements, such as lighting and surveillance
CapMetro officials said once the North Burnet/Uptown Station opens, staff will analyze and repurpose the Red Line's nearby Kramer Station, which opened in 2010, after reviewing the rail service's operational needs.
The Red Line is also now being served by the new McKalla Station, which opened in February 2024 and primarily serves Q2 Stadium riders.
Quote of note
“This is a testament to the hard work of city staff and CapMetro in the ongoing effort to listen to residents who continue to seek accessible, high-quality public transportation," said District 10 council member Mike Siegel in the release. "Supportive of Project Connect service expansion, the North Burnet/Uptown Rail Station will provide a convenient stop near the Domain for regional-wide travelers to connect to work and play while gaining access to the rest of the CapMetro transit network.”
