The Austin Transportation Department has cautioned Austin drivers to avoid driving unless necessary and watch for icing conditions on the road. The ATD is also requesting drivers to be prepared for emergencies Jan. 30-Feb. 2. Below-freezing temperatures have also prompted Austin Public Health to open overnight shelters.

The ATD’s press release cautioned drivers of icy roads and frozen bridges and overpasses and to slow down when turning. The department suggested drivers also avoid sudden braking and acceleration to prevent the vehicle from slipping on the road. The ATD suggested drivers travel with emergency supplies, such as blankets, jumper cables, emergency lights and a cellphone charger, in case of a crash or emergency.

The National Weather Service has extended the winter storm warning until 6 a.m. on Feb. 2. "Significant ice accumulation impacts are now considered likely over the Hill Country and Central Texas through Thursday morning, including Austin and San Antonio metropolitan areas," the website said.
