Since Austin City Council approved in 2015 to spend $500,000 to create a new park in North Austin, the city and community have come together to craft a master plan for that park.
The Georgian Acres Neighborhood Park is being planned for 500 E. Powell Lane, Austin, near the northwest corner of the intersection of I-35 and US 183.
Area volunteers, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department and the Austin Parks Foundation have joined efforts in the planning, according to District 4 Council Member Greg Casar's office. Volunteers conducted a survey and block walks in the Georgian Acres neighborhood to ask residents what park amenities they would like.
A meeting will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Webb Middle School, 601 E. St. Johns Ave., Austin, for residents to learn more about the next steps.
“District 4 is the most parks-deficient district in Austin, and bringing more green space to North Austin has been one of my top priorities,” Casar said. “My office has been working for months on a community-wide planning effort because I believe the new Georgian Acres park will be a great amenity for the community if it reflects the values and needs of the surrounding neighbors.”
Results from the survey indicate residents ranked playscapes for children of various ages, picnic pavilions and a trail as the top amenities they would most like to see at the new park. Casar’s office also recruited James Rojas, who is an urban planner and community activist, to assist in the planning.
Rojas is conducting several park planning sessions throughout the Georgian Acres neighborhood.
“Thanks to the efforts of Georgian Acres neighbors, I believe this park will be as unique and vibrant as our North Austin community,” he said.
