Sammy’s House is celebrating its 25th anniversary Oct. 15.

Some context

The nonprofit provides services to children and young adults who are medically fragile or developmentally delayed. Sammy’s House was founded in 1999 by Isabel Huerta.

The organization offers day programs, weekend programs and summer programs with a play-based curriculum prioritizing inclusion for children of all abilities.

How we got here

Huerta was inspired to create the organization after struggling to find specialized care in Central Texas for her third child, Sammy. The only organization she found was located in New York.

“I thought, ‘Well how hard would it be to create something like that here,’” Huerta said. “I remember thinking, ‘If this is happening to us, it has to be happening to other families.’ And indeed it was and we opened up in my house with four children.”

The organization now serves approximately 150 children a year, Huerta said.

One more thing

The organization will host its largest fundraising event of the year, Eat, Drink and Be Gatsby, on Oct. 26 at 6:00 p.m. at the Renaissance Austin Hotel. The event will feature dinner, games, raffles, and live and silent auctions.

Tickets are $175 per person and sponsorships for the event start at $2,500.
