On Memorial Day, Albert Hidrogo of Pflugerville was driving with his two sons when he saw a man standing on top of a car that was being swept away by floodwaters.
Hidrogo called 911 but because the local fire departments were responding to other emergencies, they couldn’t come to the scene immediately, said dispatcher Stacey Boeck, who received Hidrogo’s call.
“I told Albert I needed his help, he needed to be our eyes and ears,” Boeck said. “I asked Albert to yell to the victim to stay in one place and hang on.”
Hidrogo stayed on the scene for 30 minutes and mediated between emergency services and the man in danger until fire department crews arrived, Boeck said.
“He needed help,” Hidrogo said. “We couldn’t leave”
On July 15, the city of Pflugerville recognized Hidrogo for his bravery and presented him with a Lifesaving Award, which Mayor Jeff Coleman said was only the second such award given during his eight years as mayor.
Hidrogo’s family was in attendance at the ceremony.
“We’re all proud of him,” Hidrogo’s sister-in-law Lucy Castro said. “He’s our hero.”
