Next March, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles will begin transitioning over to a new vehicle inspection and registration system that will require motorists to display only one windshield sticker.

"Once we've fully transitioned to the new process, you'll just have to keep track of one date on one sticker on your windshield," said Adam Shaivitz, Texas DMV public information officer. "All you will need to do is get and pass inspection no more than 90 days before the expiration date, and then you can renew your registration."

Although the new process begins in March 2015, Shaivitz said there will be a transition period to allow inspection and registration expiration dates to sync up with one another.

"During the transition, you will still be allowed to register your vehicle if your prior inspection is valid the day you register," Shaivitz said. "Then the following year, your expiration dates for inspection and registration will be the same."

The cost and requirements of inspections and registrations will not change. However, drivers will need to pay the inspection station its portion of the inspection fee at the time of the inspection and pay the state its portion of the inspection fee along with the registration fee at the time of registration. Under the existing system, drivers pay the full inspection fee at the time of inspection. Drivers will still have the option of renewing their registration online, in-person or by mail.
