On June 4, San Marcos City Manager Jim Nuse said he will resign at the end of the city's fiscal year, Sept. 30.
After 30 years in city government, Nuse said he is ready for a job that allows him to spend more time with his wife, grandchildren and hobbies such as playing music and writing songs.
"There are a lot of business opportunities, so I don't think I'll ever want for something to keep me gainfully employed, but I really do want to control my time a little more than I have in recent years," he said. "The past 10 to 15 years have been pretty busy."
Nuse has been San Marcos' city manager since December 2010. Before that, he worked for the City of Round Rock for 27 years, the last eight of them as city manager.
Nuse said his biggest achievement in San Marcos is working with a team that provides a "standard-setting level of service in a government organization."
In a June 4 email, Nuse asked City Council members to consider assistant city managers Steve Parker and Collette Jamison for his replacement. He said his successor should focus on the city's middle class.
"I think the biggest challenge is going to be the improvement of opportunities for the middle-class workers—the people that sit next to you in church and coach your kid in soccer—and really finding an opportunity and a place for them," he said. "That comes with jobs, a good school system and solid city infrastructure."
