The Sunset Valley City Council will need to appoint a new member after voters elected Rose Cardona to be the city's new mayor May 12.

Cardona, the sitting mayor pro tem, has a year left in her term on the City Council. To become mayor, she will need to resign her current seat.

A Sunset Valley ordinance says that the city will give written notice to all residents that a council seat is open and then accept applications. A public hearing will be held so candidates can explain why he or she would be best suited to serve.

After the hearing, the City Council will appoint its new member. The City Council may consider any unique qualifications, public support, prior experience and whether the candidate is engaged in any business that may present ethical issues when voting, according to the ordinance.
