Fort Worth-based American Airlines on Monday announced upcoming route changes and a reduction of airport-related jobs.
American plans to cancel flights between the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Burbank, Calif., on Feb. 9. American also plans to lay off 150 of its employees based outside the Dallas/Forth Worth area.
American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith said there will be no direct impact to the Dallas/Fort Worth area because the Burbank operation is staffed with non-American Airlines employees. Smith said the recent moves were already in the pipeline and not tied to its parent company's bankruptcy filing late last year.
"We had various airports that were affected by the loss of a mail carrying contract," Smith said. "We had a baggage [equipment] refurbishment operation in St. Louis that was closing down. And then just various other schedule changes here and there."
American is also stopping service between Chicago and New Delhi on March 1.
The airline's parent company, AMR Corporation, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Nov. 29. The company is undergoing a reorganization plan in federal court in an effort to reduce labor costs.
