The deadline to pay 2022 property taxes is imminent in Comal County with residents required to pay the taxes by Jan. 31.

Any taxes not paid by Feb. 1 will be considered delinquent and begin to accrue penalty and interest in line with the Texas Property Tax Code, according to the Comal County Tax Office.

Property tax bills were mailed to local residents in early October. Comal County Tax Assessor-Collector Kristen Hoyt said the office accepts partial payments of taxes and will accept payment for any amount toward a property.

Partial payments are accepted for property owners who would like to pay before their hearing with the Comal Appraisal District if they are protesting the property tax value. Taxpayers may pay before the Jan. 31 deadline, and a refund will be generated should the change in value lower the taxes owed, according to the tax office.

“We chose to not mail bills to accounts still under protest with the Comal Appraisal District,” Hoyt said.

According to the tax office, for property owners with pending exemption applications, property taxes will need to be paid at the current billed amount before Feb. 1. If exemptions are granted by the Comal Appraisal District, refunds may be generated and issued by the tax office.

“I encourage property owners to pay what they can ahead of the deadline to reduce the impact of penalty and interest,” Hoyt said.

If someone is experiencing financial hardship, the tax office said it may offer an installment agreement upon delinquency for those who qualify.

This year, Hoyt introduced “pop-up tax offices” to assist in areas of the county where there is not an office. On Jan. 31, the tax office will be in Garden Ridge for its fourth visit this tax season to accept property tax payments in person. Payments will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Garden Ridge City Hall, according to the tax office.

“I am grateful for the partnership with Nancy Cain, city administrator, and the city of Garden Ridge for welcoming our presence to serve the taxpayers of Garden Ridge and the surrounding area,” Hoyt said.

Taxes can be mailed by check with the statement or property ID number to PO Box 659480, San Antonio, TX 78265.

Drop boxes are available 24 hours/7 days a week in four Comal County locations:
