Leander City Council gave preliminary approval for zoning changes to roughly 5 acres of property at the site to allow for a future commercial development at its Nov. 7 meeting.
With Mayor Christine DeLisle absent, council unanimously approved the zoning change from single-family suburban to general commercial.
The change could allow for uses ranging from retail centers and gas stations to office space and restaurants, according to agenda documents. There will be a final reading of the ordinance Nov. 21.

Jennifer Jenson of Pohl Jensen said in a letter of intent on behalf of the owners of the land, John and Nancy Gilpin, the proposed project for the site includes retail stores, office spaces, dining establishments and entertainment venues.
At the meeting, Jensen told City Council the project intends to bring 8,500-9,000 square feet of single-story retail and a 4,500-to-6,000-square-foot convenience store to the site. She also noted that the development is expected to create about 60 jobs in the area.
