The Leander Police Department is warning citizens to be aware of a possible phone scam in the area.

The police department received a report July 18 of a possible scam phone, according to LPD social media accounts. The scam call is reported to begin with a sales pitch on the purchase of an alarm system, then the solicitation for more detailed personal information. The citizen reporting the incident said they could tell by the nature of the questions that the call was not legitimate and told police that the caller ID on his phone indicated that the call was coming from a number that belongs to the City of Leander Engineering Department.

The police department said in a statement that there are many legitimate reasons that the City of Leander might call a resident, but selling an alarm service and “phishing” for personal details is not one of them. If a resident receive a phone call like this, they should not give out personal information unless they initiated the call and are secure in the knowledge that the person on the other end of the line is legitimate.

City staff is looking into the “spoofing” of the telephone number.
