Members of the Pedernales Electric Cooperative—including power customers in the Leander, Cedar Park, Westlake and Lake Travis areas—will have the option to sign up for a new solar rate starting in December, according to a press release issued this week by the PEC. Solar generation sites throughout the PEC’s service territory will produce up to 15 megawatts of solar power once complete, according to the press release. “The new Cooperative Solar Rate allows members of the cooperative to enjoy the benefits of solar energy without personally investing in or installing equipment at their home or business,” said Ingmar Sterzing, PEC’s vice president of power supply and energy services in the statement. Enrolling in solar power will cost PEC members $0.05608 per kilowatt, according to the PEC website. This compares to the flat rate power cost of $0.0605 per kilowatt for conventional residential customers, according to the site. Additional monthly fees apply to the PEC plans. Members interested in subscribing to the solar rate must commit to a 24-month period and can sign up on a first-come, first-serve basis in December, according to the PEC website. Billing for the solar plan begins in February, according to the website. Availability of solar power is dependent on the PEC’s solar output capacity.
