The Lakeway Activity Center is a multiuse facility owned and operated by the city to promote social, civic and recreational activities.

Though the facility’s demographics have gotten younger along with the rest of the city in the last 12 years, a large percentage of its members are still senior citizens, Manager Dallas Gorman said.

“There are places like Tuscan Village that have their own clubhouse, but you have to live there,” Gorman said. “Here, anyone can come into the center, and they don’t have to be a member unless they want to be in the membership groups.”

Many of the programs offered for seniors at the Lakeway Activity Center are available through the 28 membership clubs listed in the center’s catalog.

The clubs include Friends of the Parks, in which volunteers meet to do activities such as trimming plants and trail construction; Ladies of the Lake Quilting Bee, which engages in quilt-related projects; the Lakeway Dance Club-Party Group; Lakeway Painters; several different bridge clubs; a men’s breakfast group; and different singing groups that perform periodically for different events in Lakeway. All of these clubs are listed as 21 and older.

“You can be young and come to these clubs, but it tends to attract [primarily] seniors,” Gorman said.

There are also special events specific to seniors, such as the Senior Health Fair in October, she said. The Senior Health Fair is set up every fall so people from retirement communities can come to the center and get free flu shots.

In addition to the membership clubs, there are over 30 adult health and fitness classes for seniors, or other community members, to join. These classes include activities such as pickleball, fencing, yoga, tai chi and adult dance classes.

Approximately 6,000 people come through the center every month for various events, Gorman said.
