Local residents can feel peace of mind as Georgetown was named one of the safest cities in Texas for the second year in a row. In an annual ranking released last week from SafeWise, a home security company based in Salt Lake City, Georgetown landed in the 27th spot among the top 50. The company evaluated cities with a population larger than 10,000, according to a city news release. The list is based on FBI Crime Report statistics from 2013, which includes the number of violent crimes, such as robbery, murder, aggravated assault and rape, and property crimes, such as arson, burglary, motor vehicle theft and larceny. The security company also calculated the chances of these crimes happening out of 1,000 people in each city. In Georgetown, 1.31 people out of 1,000 would be a victim of violent crime, and 14.24 people would be a victim of property crime. The list reported Georgetown as having a low number of crimes for its size, with 71 reports of violent crime in 2013. In an email, Georgetown Police Chief Wayne Nero said that his department pays close attention to that list of violent crimes. “We generally have less than 1,000 total per year, which keeps us in the top two or three Texas cities with the fewest part one crimes in Texas cities [with] 50,000-100,000 in population,” he said. “Comparatively speaking, it doesn’t get much safer.” Last year Georgetown was 17th on the top 50 list, and SafeWise listed the various shopping opportunities, entertainment options and health care facilities as factors that make the city a great place to live. This year the list added Georgetown’s historic buildings, displays of flowers and the efforts to support the Georgetown Animal Shelter to the city’s appeal. Nero said it is nice to see the safety of the Georgetown community ranked in various articles. “Georgetown has always placed a high priority on public safety,” he said. “We are blessed to have a community that is so engaged and supportive of our mission.”
