The overview
The council heard the first readings for two zoning requests, one of which was to rezone 9 acres located at 2020 Airport Road from single family to industrial and general commercial land. The second request was to rezone 90 acres near the intersection of D.B. Wood Road and Cedar Break Road, upon annexation of the property, for public facility zoning.
A closer look
The zoning request for the 9-acre property, sitting across the street from the new Costco Wholesale opening in July, was submitted by Hunt Group project manager John Lam. According to the applicant, the development would bring additional services, shops and jobs to the city, as the property would include office, warehouse, retail and the business space.
The second request was to rezone 90 acres near the intersection of D.B. Wood Road and Cedar Break Road, upon annexation of the property, for public facility zoning. The property is meant to serve as the site of Georgetown ISD’s next high school.
As the city has been experiencing rapid growth, so has the school district. A demographics report from January presented to the GISD board of trustees projected the district will increase by around 3,100 students over the next five years. To meet the demand, GISD has been planning and constructing new schools throughout its boundaries. The 90-acre parcel would serve as the district’s third comprehensive high school, which is tentatively scheduled to open by 2027.
Also on the agenda
The City Council will eye possible special use permits, or SUP, for CBD stores, vape shops and payday lending stores after directing staff to prepare a future workshop to discuss the requirements.
"[I] just felt it might be appropriate for us to consider an SUP process surrounding the locations of where these businesses might reside in our community and also the amount of businesses that we would like to have of this type,” District 1 Council Member Amanda Parr said. “It’s not about eliminating these businesses. It’s really just about having a conversation about where they would potentially go.”
