Georgetown ISD announced a lone finalist for the superintendent position June 2.

The GISD board of trustees will take a final vote June 23 on whether to enter into a contract with Alvin ISD Superintendent Fred Brent as GISD Superintendent Joe Dan Lees successor.

"It is an honor to be selected as the lone finalist for Georgetown ISD, Brent said in a statement. "I look forward to serving the students and faculty of Georgetown ISD and my family and I are excited about becoming part of the Georgetown community."

Board President Scott Alarcon said Brent is bringing leadership from a larger school district to GISD.

Alvin ISD, which is about 30 minutes southeast of Houston, has 23 campuses and more than 19,700 students. It is the second largest district in Brazoria County with an annual budget of $143 million.

In comparison, GISD has 18 campuses with more than 10,500 students.

Prior to his time in Alvin, Brent received his doctorate in educational leadership at Texas A&M University. He then served as the superintendent for Anderson-Shiro Consolidated ISD near College Station until 2011 when he became superintendent in Alvin.

Lee said he is pleased with the selection.

"The field of applicants for the GISD superintendent position was strong, and trustees have identified and offered the position to one of the top superintendents in Texas" Lee said. "I am very excited about the future of this district."

Lee announced his retirement in late March, which is effective July 31. He has served the district for seven years.
