Voters approved a $275 million road bond in 2013 in which the county listed 60 projects it promised to complete. Since then, all 60 projects plus additional projects have been completed or are currently in the works, Road Bond Program Manager Mike Weaver said. Weaver added that approximately $20 million remains to be put toward additional projects.
“We have budgeted all those [projects] we have told voters we would do,” Weaver said. “Not only items the voters approved, we’ve added things to it.”
The court will hold a workshop March 5 to discuss which projects it would like to put the money toward.
While the commissioners will work to decide what projects their precinct may need before the workshop, Precinct 3 Commissioner Valerie Covey recommended the court stay in line with projects approved in the county’s Long- Range Transportation Plan. In October 2009, the court approved the plan in order to keep up with growth.
“Because we have this transportation plan, I think we should focus on the plan because we have a knowledge of where we want to go,” Covey said. “[The plan] was established for the total build-out of our county. My suggestion would be that that’s where we focus.”
In other business:
- The court discussed the formation of a citizens bond committee responsible for vetting the idea of a potential future bond election for roads and parks. The court will reconvene the conversation March 5 in order to give the judge and commissioners time to find potential committee appointees. On March 5, the court will also discuss the process and procedures for possibly calling a bond election in the fall.
- The court voted to cancel the March 12 meeting. The regular Tuesday meetings will continue March 19 in the Commissioners Courtroom, 710 Main St., Georgetown, at 9:30 a.m.
