1. Austin bans e-cigarettes in public places

Electronic smoking devices—e-cigarettes and vaporizers—are banned from public places in Austin's city limits as of Thursday, June 22. Austin City Council made the decision to outlaw the use of the electronic smoking devices after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a report warning against the harmful health effects of using the products.

2. No more downtown free parking Wednesday nights

City Council recently approved extending on-street downtown metered parking on Wednesday nights from 6 p.m. to midnight. This will go into effect gradually over the summer, according to the Austin Transportation Department.

3. Austin B-cycle expands for the third time

Eighteen new Austin B-cycle stations will come online in the next 18 months.

The first three bike-sharing stations—located at the intersections of Cesar Chavez Street and Congress Avenue, Sterzing Street and Barton Springs Road, and Henderon Street between Sixth and Ninth streets—will be installed in early July, according to Nick Olivier, Austin B-cycle special projects manager.

4. Shoal Creek Conservancy seeks feedback on new trail

The four-year-old conservancy is looking to expand the trail north and enhance the existing trail, which runs from Lady Bird Lake to 38th Street. People weighed in last Wednesday at the first of three community meetings.

Students at Austin Community College will be shown a short video explaining how campus carry, which allows people to bring concealed handguns on campus in Texas, is being implemented across the district's eight campuses. The law goes into effect Aug. 1., and ACC's fall semester starts Aug. 28.
