A Buda-based migrant worker advocacy organization is reaching out to local organizations for support in recommending improvements to a stretch of road east of the Kyle city limits.

The National Center for Farmworker Health deemed the area unsafe for walking and is recommending that sidewalks be constructed to accommodate a largely Hispanic and low-income neighborhood near Science Hall Elementary School.

The center studied the 1.5-mile stretch of road by conducting a "walkability audit" in January, during which workers from the center and about 30 community members walked southeast from the intersection of Bebee Road and Dacy Lane and stopped at the intersection of Goforth Road and High Road.

The section of road from Dacy Lane to Kensington Boulevard, which is adjacent to the elementary school, was deemed mildly walkable because it has sidewalks. Beyond that, however, the group had to traverse grassy areas and shoulders, Dahlia Ture, health education specialist for the center, said.

The center is seeking an endorsement from Hays CISD through the district's Student Health Advisory Committee. The district and center are also in discussions to use the audit for improving pedestrian and cyclist safety in the area.

Healthy Communities Collaborative is working with the center to recommend a next course of action, Learning Services Manager Christina Brito said.
