There are fewer drivers on Austin’s roads, due to city and county stay-at-home orders that are scheduled to continue through at least early May.

According to Texas Department of Transportation officials, traffic volume was down 49% the week of April 4-10.

For those who do still have to commute, look out for these three ongoing transportation projects when planning your trip.

Mt. Bonnell Road

A portion of the West Austin road near the scenic lookout point closed the morning of April 27 and will remain unavailable for drivers for five to six days as Austin Water works to repair a malfunctioning fire hydrant.

In a media release, Austin Water said it recognizes the inconvenience caused for nearby residents.

“We are working to complete the project as quickly as possible and appreciate your understanding,” the release said.

According to Austin Water officials, the cost of the project is about $50,000.

Shoal Creek bicycle lanes

The final stretch of an approximately $3 million-$4 million project to construct bicycle lanes along Shoal Creek Boulevard from US 183 to the Rosedale neighborhood is now underway. Construction began in April on the section of the bikeway between 39 1/2th Street and Shoalmont Drive.

There is no parking allowed on the west side of Shoal Creek with construction of the bikeway, although parking is still allowed on the east side.

Construction is also continuing at the intersection of Shoal Creek and Hancock Drive as well as Shoal Creek and 38th Street to realign parts of the intersection in order to integrate the new bike lanes. That work will continue even after full opening of the bikeway, according to an Austin Transportation Department spokesperson.

Construction on the bike lane project began in 2019. Since then, ATD has been working in segments to open the lanes in phases.
