Austin Public Health announced Oct. 26 that it would close its last COVID-19 testing site Oct. 27, citing the widespread availability of testing and vaccines.

The location, Metz Elementary, was one of 12 community sites opened by Austin Public Health to provide free COVID-19 testing. In February, APH consolidated several testing sites onto the Metz Elementary campus.

In the last two years, APH administered 200,836 COVID-19 PCR tests at these sites, according to a press release. APH has also distributed 52,473 COVID-19 rapid antigen test kits. APH’s work has been part of Austin’s multimillion-dollar response to the pandemic.

APH said in the press release that it has the ability to set up additional testing resources in the event of a surge in COVID-19 spread.

Community members can receive free at-home test kits through the APH Neighborhood Services Unit while supplies last. Those sites can be found here.
