Cedar Park City Council approved additional improvements to the Anderson Mill Road Phase 2 Project at a June 8 meeting, including a new traffic light at the Grand Falls Drive and Anderson Mill Road intersection.

“That’s been a very tricky intersection for a long time,” Mayor Jim Penniman-Morin said. “I think putting this light here is going to save some lives.”

The project

The Anderson Mill Road Phase 2 Project involves widening the remaining two-lane sections of Anderson Mill Road between Cypress Creek Road and Whitestone Boulevard to a four-lane divided roadway.

The $7.7 million project began in January and is expected to be completed by early 2024. Funding for the project was approved by voters in the city’s 2022 bond program.

The update

At a June 8 meeting, council approved $620,682 to expand the project’s scope to include a new traffic light at the Grand Falls Drive and Anderson Mill Road intersection with left-turn lanes and crosswalks. The funds will also reimburse the project’s contractor, Cash Construction Company, Inc., for additional costs incurred while working on the project.

The contractor incurred additional expenses from lowering storm drains, pouring in place inlets, adding safety fencing along sidewalks to keep the public safe, irrigation sleeves and tree trimming, said Chris Brickey, the city’s capital projects manager.

Funding for the order was available in the project’s budget, Brickey said, so allocating additional funding from the city's budget was not needed.

Traffic changes

Traffic will be shifted to one side of the road at several streets intersecting with Anderson Mill Road this summer as contractors work to tie in intersections and install new ramps and curbs.

On June 5, contractors began working on intersections on the northbound side of Anderson Mill Road. Construction was scheduled to start May 1 but was delayed due to wet weather conditions, said Fran Irwin, the city’s community affairs director.

These northbound intersections will be worked on in the following order:
  • Drifting Leaf Drive
  • Grand Falls Drive
  • Shady Creek Trail
  • Rhapsody Ridge Drive
  • Zeppelin Drive
Flaggers will be stationed at Shady Creek and Rhapsody during daytime construction to help drivers navigate safely.

Once work is completed on the northbound side, construction will begin on the southbound intersections:
  • Zeppelin Drive
  • Grand Falls Drive
  • Passion Flower Pass
  • Quiet Moon Trail
  • Cypress Creek Road
Each intersection is expected to be completed in about a week.
