1. Last Thursday, Austin City Council voted to spend $2 million to help relieve some of the
rape kit backlog. The Austin Police Department will now hand over 60 cases a month to a private local forensics lab, freeing up some time for APD to work through the current case flow. However, interim police Chief Brian Manley said the move still will not allow for much of a dent to be made in the backlog even with 20 cases a month also going to Dallas-based Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences.
2. National Love Your Pet Day is Monday, and Halo Pet Food and Phydeaux & Friends are
partnering to host a three-hour adoption event with the Texas Husky Rescue nonprofit organization. The event, held at 7816 Burnet Road, starts at 4 p.m. Monday and is catered by The Peached Tortilla.
3. Austin-based cooler company YETI will
open its flagship retail store this Thursday at 220 S. Congress Ave. The
grand opening will feature performances by local bands The Roosevelts, Matt The Electrician and Bruce Robison. The store, which features a stage and a bar aptly named The Barrrr, opens at 10 a.m.
4. West Campus microbrew pub Growler USA is
celebrating its one-year anniversary with happy hour prices all weekend starting Friday. Growler USA, located at 609 W. 29th St., will host five local breweries throughout the weekend, offer tasting notes on each featured craft beer as well as food specials and raffles.
5. Casey's New Orleans Snowballs, located at 808 E. 51st St., is celebrating its 21st year in business with a new food truck that is available for catering events, weddings, festivals, fundraising events and birthday parties.
The snowball company's season starts next Monday.
