Colleen and Brad Naumann, Charles Benner and Tamara Noble are set to open Down South Railhouse, 107 E. Center St., Kyle, on Jan. 1.

The bar and entertainment venue will be located at the former Railroad BBQ, near downtown Kyle. The ownership group said their new venture will provide Kyle residents of all ages a source of fun.

With plans for indoor and outdoor musical performances, a food truck court, sand volleyball, washers, horseshoes, darts, karaoke, a dance hall and children's play area, the partners said they hope to provide residents a local alternative to Austin or San Marcos entertainment venues.

"[In Kyle] we don't have a place to take our kids and enjoy ourselves," Benner said. "Our focus is to provide an establishment for the community where they can come here and have a good time."

At an Oct. 28 Kyle Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, the business was unanimously approved for a conditional use permit to paint the 4,000-square-foot building red. Benner and Colleen Naumann said they plan to make smaller aesthetic improvements to the structure, but the exterior of the building will largely remain the same.

A food truck court on the premises with up to three or four food trucks would likely be the first of its kind in Kyle.

Kyle Planning Director Manny De La Rosa said food trucks can operate in the city as long as a permanent structure located on the site has a certificate of occupancy.

Plans for Down South Railhouse also include fencing around the perimeter of the property.
