Leaders at Concordia University Texas, 11400 Concordia University Drive, Austin, decided March 1 to opt out of the campus carry law that would have taken effect Aug. 1.

Texas Senate Bill 11, signed by Gov. Greg Abbott on June 1, provides that licensed handgun carriers can carry a handgun while on state university campuses. However, the bill allows private universities, such as Concordia University Texas, to choose other handgun policies for their own campuses.

“University leadership believes concealed handguns on campus present significant concerns and are not conducive to a positive learning environment,” President Donald Christian said in a news release.
