Officials from the City of Georgetown were on hand Oct. 10 to celebrate the opening of Fire Station No. 5, located at 3600 D.B. Wood Road.

The 12,137-square-foot station will house an engine company and a ladder truck company with three shifts of seven firefighters.

Designed by BRW Architects and constructed by J Jacobs Construction, the new station includes three truck bays, administration offices, dorms and offices for fire operations staff, a kitchen, common room and weight room.

Construction on the facility began in January and cost $4.7 million, according to a news release from the city.

The facility also features a 2,838-square-foot one-story training building with indoor and outdoor classroom space and truck bays for equipment including rescue boats and reserve trucks, as well as a training tower and burn building.

The training building is a four-story metal structure with three enclosed stories and an open rooftop designed for rescue simulations, according to the news release. The training structure's floors are laid out similarly to common buildings like hotels, residences and office buildings.

The new facility will allow for some live-fire training situations, and a pipeline throughout the building will allow smoke to be pumped into rooms for training scenarios.

The facility will be open to the public Oct. 11 from 3–7 p.m.
