From May 26 to July 31, Recharge In Summer Enrichment, or RISE, offers over 90 programs for kids throughout the Houston metro area at The Woodlands Christian Academy.
The setup
To prepare each session and year, the school maps out camps in terms of age groups and enrichment, Camp Director Jolaine Swanson said. The programs have been proposed by the teachers at the academy since it began in 2022 with 270 kids and has grown to 471 students in 2025.
“One of our goals is that we really want the kids to come here to be technology-free to be able to learn new skill sets to grow them in many different ways in their lives,” Swanson said.
What is there to do?
With 90 camp sessions, camp sizes depend on the subject and age level of the camp, and they fill up fast, TWCA officials said.
Kristen Johnson, a teacher at the academy, has been leading a program since the camp began in 2022. Johnson leads LEGO Innovation for third- to fifth-graders.
“We learn a lot through how we can use perseverance in our own lives and what that looks like at school or at home or in all of these different aspects,” Johnson said. “And so it's really just a fun creative time.”
Warriors Serve Camp is also a popular camp in its fourth year that emphasizes TWCA's Pursuit of Service value for fourth to seventh graders. The camp focuses on becoming a leader in the community and includes taking the group off-campus to volunteer at the Montgomery County Food Bank, to make food bags for Meals on Wheels and make blankets for the Montgomery County Animal Shelter.
