Low- and moderate-income residents in Pearland will benefit from more than $541,000 in federal funding following City Council approval of the city’s Community Development Block Grant, or CDBG, annual action plan at its Aug. 10 meeting.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, will provide Pearland with over $541,000 through its CDBG program, according to city documents.
The federal program supports housing, community development and services, with at least 70% of CDBG expenditures required to benefit low- and moderate-income residents or areas primarily serving those households, city documents show.
Diving in deeper
The city’s current five-year plan supports using CDBG funds for emergency rental and utility assistance, mental health services, code enforcement, housing rehabilitation and other services, city documents show.
The funds will be divided among four categories, including:
- $282,023 will support the city’s Home Repair Program, which provides minor home repairs and can fund larger rehabilitation projects when a homeowner’s life, health or safety is at risk
- $108,314 will cover CDBG program administration, including personnel, training, supplies, consulting and other costs associated with managing the program
- $81,234 will be divided between Pearland Neighborhood Center and Counseling Connections for Change to support services
- $70,000 will support code enforcement for property and building code compliance in areas where a majority of residents are low- or moderate-income
Looking ahead
Following council approval, city staff will finalize the annual action plan and submit it to HUD by Aug. 16, with acceptance of the plan expected before Oct. 15, according to city documents.
