With four measles cases in Harris County confirmed by the Texas Department of State Health Services as of Feb. 14, Spring ISD will offer three mobile immunization clinics for children in the community this month. According to a Feb. 13 news release from SISD, the mobile immunization clinics will offer vaccinations free of charge to children in the Spring community, including those who are not yet of school age. “You may have heard in the news of some isolated cases of mumps and measles in Harris County and the Houston area, as well as across the nation,” said Jeanne Parker, SISD director of nursing and health services, in a statement. “There is evidence that immunizations protect children from serious illness and complications of vaccine-preventable diseases.” According to the DSHS, measles is a highly contagious respiratory illness spread by contact with an infected person through coughing and sneezing. DSHS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend children receive one dose of the measles vaccine at 12-15 months of age and another at 4-6 years old. After two doses, the measles vaccine is approximately 97 percent effective, according to the DSHS Thus far in 2019, eight measles cases have been confirmed statewide according to the DSHS. Texas had nine confirmed cases in 2018 and one confirmed case in 2017, according to state data. Parker said the mobile immunization clinics are an opportunity for parents to ensure their children’s immunizations are up-to-date. To receive immunizations at one of the following mobile clinics, children must have a parent or guardian present. Parents should also bring their child’s immunization record to the clinic as well.
