Klein ISD students in grades third through eighth outscored state averages in every subject in the spring 2026 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness exams.
The overview
Each school year, the Texas Education Agency releases statewide and district test scores for the math, reading, social studies and science STAAR tests. The 2026 science scores will be released July 31, whereas the three other subjects were released June 16.
STAAR scores are separated into four performance categories:
- Masters grade level
- Meets grade level
- Approaches grade level
- Did not meet grade level
To be considered passing, students must receive an "approaches grade level” score on each test. According to STAAR performance standards, these students are likely to succeed in the next grade level, or may need targeted academic intervention.
The breakdown
KISD’s 2026 STAAR scores show that half of the grade levels tested saw an increase in passing math scores compared to the previous year, and half saw an increase in passing reading scores.
Social studies, which is only taken by eighth graders, saw an increase in the district's passing scores compared to the previous year, and KISD was seven percentage points higher than the state’s average.
Students saw improved performance year-over-year in all exams except:
- Third grade math
- Sixth grade math
- Seventh grade math
- Third grade reading
- Fourth grade reading
- Sixth grade reading
Quote of note
“The 2026 results demonstrate both the progress Texas students are making and the work that remains ahead of us,” Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said in a June 16 news release. “We are encouraged by continued gains in mathematics, especially with the growing number of students participating and succeeding in advanced mathematics courses. The gains in middle school reading are also notable, as it may be associated with the statewide ban on the use of cell phones in schools.”
