Rainey Street trail connection to open July 13

Austinites are invited to celebrate the grand opening of the Rainey Street Trailhead on July 13.

The details

In response to growth throughout the Rainey Street District, the city and The Trail Conservancy—a nonprofit organization committed to protecting and enhancing the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail—have made improvements throughout the area, dating back to 2007. Construction on this $1.1 million trail connection began last summer.

The project provides an important gateway to the downtown trail that will improve ecological function, and expand the recreational use and amenities of the area, according to The Trail Conservancy.

The new green space will feature a nature play area, new park benches, a floating dock for kayaking and paddleboarding access, and native plant gardens.

Funding for the project comes from both donations made to The Trail organization as well as the Austin Parks and Recreation Department’s parkland dedication program.

Next steps

The grand opening celebration on July 13 will be held from 9-11 a.m., and will include music and activities hosted by the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center and The Trail Conservancy.
