Despite present challenges in enrollment, Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD is making future plans for its facilities and programs to better serve students.

Department heads of the district’s operations, athletics, fine arts, Career Technical Education and technology presented their specific needs during a Community Advisory Committee workshop March 12.

The specifics

Athletic Director Scott Lehnhoff said that his program is going to need security fencing at Lehnhoff Stadium, as well as potential shaded and indoor training locations to keep student-athletes out of the heat. Director of Fine Arts Beth Bronk’s safety concerns included the need for a paved parking lot at Samuel Clemens High School.

Assistant Superintendent Kelly Kovacs said that expansion of culinary kitchen equipment, Ag Mechanics and video production space would also best serve existing and future students. Technology Director Steve Barnwell stressed the need to have learning devices such as iPads and Chromebooks mirror the district’s student enrollment of just under 15,000.

Quote of note

SCUCISD Superintendent Paige Meloni said the expenditures they are talking about are not in the district's general operating budget.

“We have to lock arms with our community to say, what is it that you want and that we will be able to provide for the next generation of kids that come through here,” Meloni said. "We want our families to continue to choose SCUC, but it will require some investment in our programs and our facilities and our opportunities that enhance student experience."

Looking ahead

Meloni said the district is currently accepting proposals from consultants to help with the planning process going into the fall, and that individuals can expect communications on the district's Bond Planning Committee in May or June.
