47,552 voted against the new tax rate, or 54%, while 40,579, or 46%, of early voters voted in support of potential travel and event taxes for a proposed Dallas Stars arena according to unofficial voting results.
A total of 88,131 voters in Collin and Denton counties participated in early voting.
What you need to know
The proposed taxes would help pay for the city of Plano's $700 million portion of the proposed $1 billion arena. If approved, the city could consider taxes such as:
Up to 5% short-term motor vehicle rental tax
Short-term hotel occupancy tax up to 2% of room price
Up to $3 per vehicle event parking tax
Up to 10% of each ticket price as an admissions tax
Up to $5,000 per game on a member of a major league team that plays a professional sports game at the venue
The background
The Stars arena is part of a $3 billion redevelopment effort at The Shops at Willow Bend, which includes a $2 billion mixed-use development, per previous reporting.
The city also created a tax increment reinvestment zone to help fund the project through sales tax growth in the area over 41 years.
