In an effort to build a pipeline for new educators within Alvin ISD, the board of trustees approved a memorandum of understanding with the University of Houston-Clear Lake to support teacher residencies.
The MOU was approved at trustees’ Sept. 8 meeting.
In a nutshell
The district was awarded an allotment from the Learning Acceleration Support Opportunities, or LASO, Cycle 4 program. The program was created under House Bill 2, which passed during the 89th Texas Legislature in 2025, and provides state funding to support paid teacher candidates when partnered with approved university Educator Preparation Programs, such as UHCL.
The residency program will provide aspiring teachers with year-long classroom experience during the 2026-27 school year, according to district documents.
Students will be able to work alongside effective mentor teachers while completing their certification requirements.

Special education
Emergent bilingual
Secondary mathematics
This year, the program will cost the district $10,000, which Superintendent Rhonda Mason said is sustainable financially for the district.
“Because the cost is so low, it does appear to be something that we can sustain as long as we have the relationship with University of Houston-Clear Lake,” Mason said at the meeting.
