Upcoming projects
Gattis School Road segments 4 and 5
Project: The project will widen the four-lane road to a six-lane road between Double Creek Drive and Via Sonoma Trail in Round Rock.
Update: City officials began the process of using eminent domain to secure right-of-way property for the road widening project in May.
Project: The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority and Texas Department of Transportation are studying the feasibility of extending tolled main lanes alongside existing non-tolled lanes, adding signalized intersections, and enhancing pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure along a 15-mile stretch of US 290 in Bastrop County to ease congestion as the area's population continues to grow.
Update: An environmental study and schematic design are underway, with the first draft schematics expected in mid-2026, according to Mobility Authority records.
Austin will commit $104M to support future I-35 decks; council declines scaled-down alternative
Austin will commit more than $100 million to support future public amenity decks covering portions of I-35, after a scaled-down alternate proposal was tabled this spring.
Austin has planned for years to bridge some of the new-look I-35 through a local "cap and stitch" program. The city would develop larger caps and smaller stitches to cover the interstate, connecting downtown and East Austin with public decks that could house parks, plazas and small buildings or venues.
Building all caps and stitches is now estimated to cost about $400 million, added amenities across all decks could cost nearly $260 million, and maintaining the structures will cost about $9 million annually once they're in place.
Austin has yet to secure any of that funding, and it remains to be seen when decks would be built. However, the city has reserved an initial $104 million for the future caps' foundations.
Ongoing projects
Project: This project will add two 3-mile lanes on either side of 183A Toll from East Whitestone Boulevard to Avery Ranch Boulevard, as well as a shared-use path connecting the existing US 183 trailhead.
Update: Construction is underway on both the north and southbound frontage roads.
Loop 360 Courtyard Drive/RM 2222 project
Project: This section of Loop 360’s refresh will remove the traffic signal from the Loop 360 main lanes at Courtyard Drive and construct an overpass. It will also reconfigure RM 2222 at Loop 360 to a diverging diamond interchange and add shared-use paths.
Update: A left-lane closure at the northbound Loop 360 exit ramp to RM 2222 is ongoing as of May, per the Texas Department of Transportation.
Construction on Austin Avenue bridges in Georgetown to resume
The southbound Austin Avenue bridge decks will be demolished beginning this month in preparation for new bridge construction, according to a May 29 city update.
The bridge demolition will take approximately two months. After the new bridge decks are complete, the contractor will begin working to rehabilitate the northbound lane bridge decks, scheduled for this November.
Both bridges are anticipated to be completed and open to traffic next April, the update states.
The $12.7 million project, funded by the 2021 voter-approved mobility bond, aims to address the structural repairs, as well as safety upgrades and drainage improvements.
