Surprise Clear Lake road signs to be removed this week

The four large road signs that surprised Clear Lake residents two weeks ago are scheduled to be removed June 21, according to a press release from Dave Martin, Houston City Council District E member.

The dynamic road signs designed to display traffic-related messages were erected without warning at Clear Lake City and Space Center boulevards, Bay Area and Space Center boulevards, Bay Area Boulevard and El Camino Real, and El Dorado Boulevard and Hwy. 3.

Based on community feedback to the District E office and Martin's own concerns with the these signs being located in residential areas, Martin said he requested Houston Public Works remove all four signs immediately.

According to Martin, neighbors were not made aware signs would be installed before work began. One neighbor who reached out to Community Impact Newspapersaid residents were angered by the surprise and also concerned the installations would require the removal of mature trees that obstruct the signs.

“Council member Martin has made it clear to HPW it was completely unacceptable for the contractor to begin work without project notification,” the release said.

Martin confirmed with Houston Public Works Director Carol Haddock the signs were part of public works’ Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery Grant Program, according to a press release.
