A final report from a state-commissioned task force released Dec. 19 found the state’s public school funding formulas to be outdated, unsustainable and over-reliant on property taxes. PISD sent approximately $208 million this year to the Texas Education Agency as part of the state’s practice of redistributing tax revenues from property-wealthy school districts to property-poor school districts.

Texas’ 86th Legislature convened into open session Jan. 8, and re-evaluating the school funding formulas is expected to be a top priority for lawmakers, including the Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dennis Bonnen. One of the proposals to address recapture in the school finance commission’s final report would compress local property tax rates.
