The southwest corner of Buckingham and Abrams roads in South Richardson will soon be home to a hybrid development that includes self-storage and retail shops following approval of a zoning change at tonight's City Council meeting.
Land-use regulations in Richardson reserve self-storage facilities for industrial districts. To circumnavigate this regulation, developer Platinum requested a zoning change from residential to planned development.
The 30,500-square-foot building would include self-storage units, offices and 8,400 square feet of retail space on the ground floor. Applicant Maxwell Fisher said whether the building will include three or four levels is not yet determined; however, only three stories will be above ground.
Leasing agent David Jones said several retail tenants have expressed interest in the space. Potential businesses could include a restaurant, a cafe or dessert shop, a dry cleaner and a florist among other tenants.
Construction on the project is slated to begin in the first or second quarter of 2019 and last eight months, Fisher said.
The motion to approve the zoning change was approved 6-1 with Council Member Bob Dubey dissenting.
